Caregiver Training Programs for Home Health

MODULE 1: Foundations of Caregiver Training This module establishes the foundational knowledge that home health clinicians — including Registered Nurses (RNs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), and Physical Therapists (PTs) — need to develop and deliver effective caregiver training programs. It examines the critical role caregivers play in home health outcomes, the multifaceted challenges they face, and the regulatory and ethical frameworks that govern caregiver education. Caregivers are the backbone of home-based healthcare, often providing the majority of day-to-day patient support. Clinicians must understand not only the clinical needs of the patient but also the capabilities, limitations, and wellbeing of the caregiver. Caregivers frequently experience physical strain from patient handling, emotional burden from ongoing caregiving responsibilities, and financial stress — all of which directly impact the quality of care they provide.
